In her Harbeson, Delaware studio Betsey manipulates small strips of fabric, natural materials and found objects into collages recreating the landscapes and moods of the East Coast shores where she grew up - from the rocky coast of Maine, to the Nantucket moors, to the Delaware seashore where she now lives. While here work is derived from a craft technique, it crosses the line of craft into the world of landscape art. Viewed from a distance the work is often mistaken for painting, a trick of the eye which is revealed upon close examination of the details.
While her professional life has been as an interior designer and project manager, her hobbies have always been centered on textiles, whether sewing, weaving, embroidery, silk-screening or quilts. She thanks her mother for the basics of "handwork", and her father for the love of art and the sea, and a "designing eye".
Betsey also designs liturgical vestments and alter appointments. Several New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia and Pennsylvania clergy and churches own her work.
Betsey graduated from Drew University and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She has also studied at the Textile Institute of Rhode Island School of Design. She exhibits at the Rehoboth Art League where she has received the Margaret Richardson Award for textile collages, and the Heron Gallery (Aston, PA). Her work may also be seen at Stepping Stone Gallery in Lewes, DE and Coastal Gallery in Rehoboth, DE. Craft shows on her agenda routinely include those at Hagley Museum, Rehoboth Art League, Lewes Historical Society, Academy Art Museum, Easton, MD, Ann Marie Garden (Smithsonian Institute, Solomon's Island, MD).
