Artist Statement

My current artwork contrasts the natural surface and structure of stone with its' inner and invisible beauty. I am developing a vocabulary of imagery derived from the intersection of segments of imaginary spherical forms. The spheres represent energy and spirit as invisible realities that interact with matter, thus adding additional dimension to the fundamentals of the sculpture. My public works consider the unseen forces of the seasons and human interaction as part of the subject matter. The stone furniture is sculptural, functional, and durable.

I was trained as an educator, a craftsman and an artist and hold a B.S. degree in education and a M.F.A. in Fine Arts sculpture. My work has focused on stone and public environments for the past twenty years. During my career I have completed several major public and private commissions throughout Delaware and the Philadelphia region including the "Quill and Cube" monument in Dover, Delaware and "Rendezvous" in Wilmington, Delaware. In each of these commissions I was actively involved in the site design as well as the creation and installation of the artwork.

As an advocate for the arts, I initiated the establishment of the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts in 1978 and served as its’ first director. In 1994, in collaboration with seven other artists and Wilmington's Sister Cities Organization, I helped to establish and maintain the international exhibition group known as SYNE. SYNE artists have exhibited in Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, and across the USA. My international work as a sculptor has also taken me to Italy on several occasions and to China as an official Delaware Ambassador of the Arts.
