Artist Statement

After teaching art education in the public schools for many years I was introduced to the craft of traditional basket making by an expert from North Carolina. The craft is still totally made by hand, where as many other crafts have been mechanized over time. I have had the wonderful opportunity to create hand made baskets of many styles but, the "Nantucket" is a favorite. Perhaps because it lends itself to many challenges and many moments of satisfaction when completed.

Making the basket combines the natural, tactile, materials which can be blended into a work of art in so many different ways. This also makes the craft appealing and collectable as well as functional. Sandra Ridgely ... Member ... Delaware Basketmakers Association
