Art has been central to my life since childhood, however, my medium of expression has changed dramatically over the years. I began working as a painter, but after years of dissatisfaction, decided to try working three dimensionally and made functional clay pieces. When I realized that pottery would not completely satisfy my need for self expression, I decided on a more holistic approach and today employ a wide range of artistic techniques and media to realize my voice.
My work is fairly eclectic in both methods of expression and subject matter. My free standing sculptures include combinations of carved wood, stone and modeled clay. I also create assemblages of found objects which are usually altered with paint of by carving. Much of my inspiration comes from my observations of the natural world and it's inhabitants. The beauty, fragility and humor I see provide me with a never ending source of ideas, as do acts of violence and destruction.
My formal training in sculpture took place at the Corcoran College of Art and Design where I attended evening classed in the Open Program during the 1980's and early 90's and studied under Berthold Schmutzhart. While there I received the Mary Lay Thom Sculpture Award for outstanding work.
I have participated in juried shows in Montgomery County, MD, Annapolis MD, and at the Ward Museum of Wild fowl Art in Salisbury, MD. As a member of the Artists' Exchange, my work has been included in shows of their work at both the Peninsula Gallery in Lewes, DE and the Coastal Frame Shop and Gallery in Rehoboth Beach, DE. My work is a part of several private collections and also that of the Delaware Folk Art Museum in Wilmington. While there I received the Mary Lay Thom Sculpture Award for outstanding work.
