Artist Statement

The gift of an art set and a Brownie Hawkeye camera on her tenth birthday was the inspiration for Collage Artist Dawn Crosby's unique approach to art.  The collages she creates combine her experience as a painter, photographer and social psychologist into an artistic visualization of outstanding personalities or themes that have emerged from the American culture.

With a precision of color and design, Ms. Crosby presents her images in light of what these special individuals have communicated to the varied mass of American opinion.  Each collage asks the question, "What was their magic?"  Her art has a broad appeal, focusing on personalities as diverse as Marilyn Monroe, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Elvis Presley.

Ms. Crosby is presently distributing her work in the form of prints and cards in an attempt to reach beyond the audience of the original canvas.

Dawn Crosby resides in Wilmington, Delaware and is a native of the First State.  She holds degrees from Antioch University and Santa Barbara City College.  In 1987, she established a professional resume and writing service.

On her choice to juggle a business and art career, Ms. Crosby comments, “It is difficult for an artist to earn a living.  Our creativity doesn’t generally earn us a living until we are dead and even then nothing’s certain.  So most of us need to be employed.  The problem that occurred for me was that no matter what employment environment I landed in, I had a tendency to be creative.  And just as tradition does not take well to creativity, neither does established corporate policy and procedure.  It finally occurred to me that I could prosper in an environment that combined earning a living with my creative urges … and writing has always been one of my great loves.”

She continues to work independently, while creating new collage designs.  Recent work encompasses a powerful, two canvas 9/11 series and current work on a new series that includes President Obama, Paul Newman, Sophia Loren, Lincoln, and Jlo.
